Kim's Kale Smoothie

A lot of people are asking about that kale smoothie I’ve been making on Great Day for the past year. Sounds scary yucky. It’s delicious! The whole idea came about through my friend, Judy, who got a recipe from Dr. Mitra Ray. Dr. Ray is an amazing woman who’s working around the nation with Juice Plus helping people get healthier. I’m learning alot from her, and Judy who’s doing the same thing on a local level. Anyway, I took the original recipe and changed it a little. I drink it nearly every day and feel great. My kids love it too! This recipe fills a blender. You can save it in the fridge for about 24 hours. Kim’s Kale Smoothie 3-4 Tablespoons of flax seed Meal 3-4 Tablespoons protein powder ( I use Juice Plus Complete) Big handful of chopped, fresh kale 1/2 Frozen Banana A few cubes of frozen Mango, Pineapple and/or any frozen berries Fill with water and enjoy! We top off our glasses with a little 100% natural juice like Grape or BlackberryBlend for added sweetness, but it's not ...

Working Mom Guilt When a Child's Sick

It’s 3:50am and I’m supposed to be on the road to work. Instead, I’m sitting on my 5 year old’s bed, taking his temperature, giving him some medicine to get his fever down. He’s burning up, and melting my heart with his dear, sweet smile and loving eyes. He just wants to keep giving me hugs and I want to keep giving them back. This is when I hate leaving home for work. I know he’s well taken care of. I trust my husband, our stay at home parent. I keep saying that to myself, because I realize these pangs of wanting to stay home are selfish. I feel better about being a good mother when I’m the one taking his temperature, touching his forehead with my lips, and giving him comforting smiles as he keeps sneezing, blowing, wiping and laying. However, the more I think about it, Finnley won’t notice that I’m not the one to fill his juice cup and turn on another Star Wars movie. Finnley won’t notice who throws away all of his used tissues. I have to temper this and know that in a few hours, I’l...

Does factual reporting need ALL the facts?

The other night a friend, a news anchor, called me in tears asking how I get through some stories without completely falling apart on air. Sometimes, frankly, I do fall apart on the air. These days, it’s exceptionally hard as we report a 14-year-old boy being charged as an adult for raping and killing a 4-year-old boy. What’s weighing on me with this story is how it’s being covered in TV newscasts. I’m conflicted as a journalist, TV news anchor, and mother. The 14 year old confessed some gruesome details, according to court documents. Tell me, when does the viewer need to know these gruesome details of rape, sodomy and murder - while putting breakfast out for the kids, while making dinner with kids doing homework at the kitchen table, late at night when the kids are already in bed? We walk a fine line every day between the community’s need - to - know and plain and simple voyeurism. What is our job? I think this question needs to be asked often, especially as we decide what facts to i...
