Trying to go natural
Over the last two years I’ve changed the way I eat. That’s working. I‘ m eating more from the earth and less from packages. Now, I’ m trying to use more natural products in the toiletry department and having a much harder time. First, I threw out my antiperspirant. Studies say the aluminum in antiperspirant could be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease. Hmm, after sweating and stinking through too many blazers that needed to be dry cleaned far too often, I ditched the deodorant and went back to the lovely antiperspirant. Ah. I feel and smell much better. It just wasn’t a logical change for my life.
I tried going natural with my face. I went on vacation and used no makeup. I just used sunscreen during the day and jojoba oil as my moisturizer at night. I broke out with a horrible, itchy red rash, like dermatitis. I thought it was the oil so I put it aside. Well, last week, I was outside doing yard work, sweating, when my face broke out in this rash again. Hmmm, it was a different sunscreen, but by the same brand as before. Ah hah! Was it the sunscreen!? (Sunscreen for sensitive skin no less.) I wanted to use sunscreen without oxybenzone which I was told was harmful to our health; could ironically cause cancer while you’re wearing it to protect yourself from cancer causing sun rays. Well, the sunscreen I finally found that doesn’t cause bumps has that dreaded ingredient in it. I am so frustrated! There are some all natural sunscreens that I would love to try, but they are expensive. I feel like such a fool in saying that because what’s the price we put on our health? Is buying a small $30 bottle of natural sunscreen a better price than paying for expensive healthcare should I get cancer or any other illness from using chemical laden sunscreen?
Sometimes my husband looks at me without saying a thing, but I know he’s thinking that I just need to chill out and stop worrying about so many things. Hmm, that’s another blog. I’ll stop here and try to find a dermatologist to help me with these itchy red bumps.

i disagree with GWB about pink being ok, but i do hate sunscreen lotions - anything that burns our eyes can't be good on skin. you are so fair, you may also like these products. my dermatologist wears them in her pool. http://www.sunsoul.com/ I wear the tops and hat. also, agree about the vit D - we need it for calcium absorption too.
ReplyDeleteHey Kim,
ReplyDeleteTry Aubrey Organics for your face cleaning system. I have been using it for about a year and like it. I get it at our local co-op natural food store. Reasonably priced. I ordered it online because I wanted the sensitive skin line. For sunscreen, try Vanicream. Find it online. No formaldhyde, parabens, fragrance, dyes, etc... and no oxybenzone. My sister discovered this brand becuase her son has eczema. I'm with you on the anti-perspirant. I have tried many and haven't found a good one. Baby steps!
